HOD X NKP: BIG HEARTS CREW
Meet “HOD x NKP: BIG HEARTS” Heart of Dinner’s first-ever apparel!
When brainstorming and planning the design for the sweatshirt, we knew two things for certain: use illustrations to capture the very essence of what makes Heart of Dinner so intimate and, equally as important, collaborate with an artist who's been a part of the journey since the very beginning.
We are beyond excited and thrilled to have collaborated with NY/Seoul-based designer Nancy Pappas for our inaugural apparel launch!! At the start of the pandemic, she reached out to support our “temporary relief effort” initiative at the time and helped us create logos, social media graphics, and revamped the first iteration of our website. Throughout the entire time, Nancy has been one of the most incredible champions of Heart of Dinner, amplifying our work through press, donating to our cause, and continually supporting the mission while being a part of the journey.
“It was very meaningful to work on this sweatshirt with the founders of Heart of Dinner and to create something that visually represents the community, the volunteers, the elderly, and the HEART that goes into every part of what they do every day. I loved the creative process— giggly and productive voice notes and feedback and dinner brainstorms— they provided a document of their initial ideas and I went to work sketching out all the elements. After drawing all the individual elements, I collaged them together, added and subtracted some pieces, and then redrew everything again so elements layered and lived together cohesively…it was such a fulfilling piece to work on.” - Nancy Pappas
We wanted to create something that symbolized the care that goes into every moving piece of Heart of Dinner. You’ll find handwritten notes, hot lunch boxes, decorated brown bags, ingredients that bring our Elderly a sense of comfort and familiarity: persimmons, bitter melon, a warm bowl of rice. Easter eggs are scattered throughout of the magical people, places, and things that make Heart of Dinner so special: can you find the Partybus Bakeshop bus? The homage to the Two Bridges neighborhood where we cooked the first Heart of Dinner meal and hand-wrote notes out of our apartment? How about the origami fans that were meticulously handmade to be tied to each care package, lovingly created by one of our ongoing volunteers who first joined us in early summer 2020?
The cozy and fitted terracotta color and the soft warm shade of red symbolizing luck in our households made this the perfect color choice, and a timely nod to Lunar New Year that’s right around the corner.
We couldn’t be more proud and honored to share this with you and hope this will be your new favorite all-occasion sweatshirt too!
